Here we
are presenting another single figure. The "Monkey King", is one of the most beloved mythical figures of Chinese
folklore. Known to the Chinese as "Journey to the West", and written by Wu Ch'eng-en (1500-1582), a scholar-official,
these classical Chinese novels are allegorical renditions encompassing fables, fairy tales, legends, superstitions and monster
stories and numerous aspects of the Taoist and Buddhist religions, with the Monkey King as the central figure. He
is an extremely smart and capable but rebellious character able to transform himself into seventy two different beings.
Using clouds as his vehicle, traveling 180,000 miles in a single somersault, he employs amazing feats of magic and
guile in his adventures. It is thought that the author was trying to convey to his readers a rebellious spirit successfully
challenging the untouchable feudal rulers of the time.
